I finally revealed one of my secrets to a man, Calum MacInness, that I could run well, faster than any full-sized man. And so did I, ahead of a man twice my size.

This is one of the secret things of me, the things I have not revealed to any person, save to Morag, my wife, and Johnnie and James, my son, and Flor, my daughter; I can run, and I can run well, and if I need to I can run faster and longer and more surely-footedly than any full-sized man, and it was like this that I ran then, through the mist and the rain, taking to the high ground and the blackrock ridges, yet keeping below the skyline.

He was ahead of me, but I spied him soon, and I ran on and I ran past him, on the high ground with the brow of the hill between us. Below us was a stream, I can run days without stopping. That is the first of my three secrets, and one secret I have revealed to no man.

The last time Cobie Jane spent time with her two sons was in 2018, despite her legal right to shared custody with her ex-husband, who lives with the boys full time. Known around their Connecticut neighborhood for his aggression, her ex has raged at neighbors, school administrators, and coaches, Jane says, and their divorce was prompted by an outburst in which he physically attacked their younger son at the breakfast table in 2015.

Brief: Providers brushed off Tomeka Walker nearly a dozen times during her first pregnancy. When she showed up with bleeding, called with concerns about lack of movement in the womb, or just generally had questions, she was told “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine.”

But while getting ready for a Memorial Day cookout at her parents’ home, she started having what felt like period cramps. She later found out they were contractions. Within the hour, she gave birth to her son — who she'd already named Khairi — in her childhood bedroom. He was just over 21 weeks old and died shortly afterward at the hospital.

Walker, like many Black women in the South, did not get the care she needed to cope during own pregnancy loss. Georgia and Alabama, where Walker lives, are the most dangerous places in the country to give birth. But despite that — and because of that — women like Walker have built community-based support to help others who are going through pregnancy-related loss, providing the wraparound care and mental health support that they never had.
